Just to save a bit of energy, HMMM - 04/20/2013 15:43:01
Rating: [3 of 5 Stars!]
Strength: Size of the drive, Western Digitals long reputable history
Weakness: 2 Year warranty, WD doesn't cover the cost of shipping a defective unit that is still within its warranty period.
Summary: Western Digital by my own experience has been a reliable HD manufacturer.
In September 2012 I purchased this drive from CC without their direct replacement warranty. In April of 2013 (just 7 months later) the drive began to have read issues. I luckily managed to save my photos and music before it died. After doing some research I found out that WD has set by default this and other "green" drives to park their heads every 8 seconds regardless of what your doing. WD actually has the software on their website to change or disable this feature. The reason for doing this was that in parking the heads every 8 seconds it saves some energy making the drives "GREEN"... the downside is that it can greatly reduce the life of the drive. I have sent it back for warranty and purchased another 3TB from CC and disabled this feature, along with the other 8 Green drives that I own. |
