Does the job of a pvr - 12/29/2015 23:37:04

Rating: 4 of 5 Stars! [4 of 5 Stars!]

Good picture quality, easy to use, reasonable price in light of the basic features.

Upon recording a show the epg provided show name is replaced in the recorded show section with the station call letters, date and time. This requires keeping a crib sheet near the TV to remember which show was recorded from a given station at a particular day and time.

Well it does the PVR job and its reasonably priced and it works with my old HDD hardware eliminating the expense of buying a new hard disk. (I took an old IDE drive out of a dated desktop PC and hooked it up to my "IDE to USB 2.0 HDD converter" and plugged it in. At first the PVR did not recognize the I hooked it up to my laptop and formatted it and on the next try in the PVR it worked. It also worked with a spare SATA drive) I have been running it a little over a week now and it has reliably recorded all the shows I booked. The video quality is top notch. I have an outdoor 8 bay antenna mounted on a pole on the side of the chimney about 28 feet above ground and have an inline RF amplifier before the signal splitter which distributes the signal to 3 TVs and the this Homeworx box. I get 34 TV channels with 1 bay pointed at the CN Tower in Toronto and the other bay pointed to Buffalo NY. This includes ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, PBS, CW, CBC, CTV, GLOBAL, CITY, TVO, CHCH, OMNI and more. From a controlling the box point of view the remote is OK. No better or worse than the remote that used to come with VCRs in the 1990s so I cant complain about that. The one thing that is still getting better is the firmware. The controls are basic but reliable. An oddity of the device is that while you set up timers to record shows by name from the EPG (ex The National) it appears in the playlist after recording under the name of the channel and time it was recorded (ex CBLT 20151225 2300. The INFO screen on V2.1 firmware scrambles the show description text so I sent the help desk a bug report. But this is not a big deal as the show description is just fine when you view it through the EPG screen which is the one you use all the time. (and the firmware is upgradeable any time a new version is published). One nice touch is how the PVR automatically starts up about 1 minute before recording time if in standby mode to enable the USB drive to power up/spin up and starts recording exactly on time. Priced at the cost of about one month cable TV or satellite subscription i suggest its well worth a try if you want to record things. I also hooked the hard drive to my Laptop computer in a separate test and found I could watch the PVR recorded TV shows without any issue on Windows 7. A refreshing respite from paying more monthly TV bills. I would have gone with 5 stars on the rating if I had not found the one firmware bug on the INFO screen.
