Great online reviews, nice shiny box, very tweak-able through telnet, plug and play pretty much, low cost.
- wireless module died within 2 days
- replacement has poor sync and low SNR
- broken web GUI for the BRET test
- takes 2 days to get an email response from support
I had high hopes for this unit from all the hype and reviews on the Internet; however either I am very unlucky or simply put it you get what you pay for. And with TP-Link you got crap.
The first TP-LINK TD-W8960N worked great however after a restart the wireless module just died, the SSID was still being advertised but no matter what I did I could not connect to it, new firmware and a factory reset didn't help.
The replacement unit had terrible sync rates and signal-to-noise ratios compared to my old adsl modem or even the first TD-W8960N unit I had; the most interesting thing changing the power supply (had compatible lying around) almost cleared up the sync/snr issue but not completely.
There was other minor issues with it like BRET test failing if it was started through the web GUI (but working through Telnet), I advised customer support of it and it took them 2 days to respond.
Bottom line stay away from this unit unless cost is an issue; modem SYNC stats below:
Old DSL605EU Modem:
Sync: 3008kbps, Down SNR 8
Sync: 3008kbps, Down SNR 6.3
Sync: 2400kbps, Down SNR 5.9
Second TD-W8960N with MY power supply
Sync: 2944kbps, Down SNR 5.9
