Momentus XT is a BEAST! - 10/31/2010 14:40:09
Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!]
Strength: I replaced the stock 160GB 5400RPM drive in my MacBook Pro (13" Unibody, mid-2009) with a 500GB Momentus XT. After installing OS X on the new drive, I used Migration Assistant to port over all my old files and user account to the new drive. I then ran a defrag just for good measure and restarted a few times to "train" the selective SSD memory of the drive. A restart cycle - from logged in, through shutdown, back through boot up, and back into logged in with all startup apps open - takes about 21 seconds now, not including whatever time it takes me to type in my password. That's amazingly fast, and everything in general feels snappier and more responsive. 500GB is also a nice amount of storage compared to 160GB ;-).
Weakness: For $134.06 after taxes on a 500GB drive, you aren't getting very much storage per dollar compared to other drives on the market. However, other cheaper hard drives aren't going to give you the same performance. If you're don't care about speed and just need storage capacity, or are looking for a drive to put in an external enclosure, I would recommend you get a normal 5400/7200RPM drive rather than a Momentus. Save yourself the money if the speed isn't something you care for.
Summary: Overall, if you're looking for a blazing fast hard drive, but don't want to shell huge amounts out for a comparably sized SSD, the Momentus XT is an excellent product. If you just need more storage capacity and don't care for speed or are putting together an external drive, don't bother spending the extra, just get a standard pure mechanical drive. I think Seagate's got it right this time with the hybrid drives. |
